One minor complaint
Great game but there is a major skill difference between Level 3 and 4. I've gotten to the point where I can win at Level 3 every time but Level 4 wipes the floor with me.
Need to upgrade.
Well, I must agree, that even up to level 4, this chess engine is pretty weak. It moves so quickly, that it can't really put much "thought" into its moves. And it shows -- routinely getting itself into nasty pins, and not protecting its back-rank for the opportunities for a quick piece grab. The app itself is clean, good interface, looks nice. I hope the pro version plays alot better, as I'm probably going to upgrade. Also, PLEASE make the "offer draw" and resign options easier (right now they are completely hidden in the statistics menus). Hoping the pro version either has, or will have, options to save and send/share games. Thanks.
Decent little game
I think it's a decent little game. If you are looking a fun Chess game this is the one. The only beef I have is it is a little dumb until level 3 or so but level 1 to 3 Re good for novices I bet the paid version is better but for the price( free) this is a good game
One of the best!
Unlike most other chess apps, this one actually shows you the row and column names and keeps the list of moves. Very helpful for learning the notation and discussing a game.
I don't know what the other review is talking about with not being able to castle, I've never had a problem. Coupled with a beautiful default skin and a great AI on level 5, this is just what I was looking for to improve my game, and now if I can just get good enough to beat that damned AI I might spring for the pro version.

The best chess app out there
The AI is realistic. The graphics are lovely. The feature that shows all legal moves for each piece is a great learning tool. The hint feature is awesome--it's like having a chess master by your side, whispering in your ear when you need help.

It's basically just a chess game where u can go against the computer or two player which just two ppl on the same iPod on both sides. Great game to pass the time.
needs updates
Haven't these people ever heard of castling? if you haven't look it up. It's annoying how you can't castle in this game; it makes it much harder. I learned castling when at a formal chess class at school in second grade, so I am not making this up. Please change this; it's VERY annoying.

This is the only app I have ever bought, and it's so good that I have considered springing for the pro version. This one's a bargain at $.99.
The user interface is very clean without unnecessary stuff. Take back and hint features are great for someone like me who knows the rules but haven't played much.

Perfection
The new updated version is amazing...
When my friends won't play me I have a realistic version at hand and it tells me what strategy my opponent is using plus times my moves and gives my winning percentage. Scary... Right!!
Even so I also get hints when I get in a bind and it highlights my last move. Guess what? I can go back in my game so I can take chess notation which is automatically displayed at the top. Beautifuly made with no complications You need to check out this splendid application!!!!!!
Great game!
This is hands down the best Chess game on the store. Go get it before the author comes to his senses and increases the price. Great looks, it's quick but powerful and the best part - it's fun to play even if you're a beginner. Great feature set and options. Once I got better at chess, I upgraded to the pro version, which is well worth the money.
Best chess app period!
If you truly know chess there is no possible way to rate this under 5 stars. This program puts the resources where it needs to be... In the gaming engine! All complaints about not seeing the pieces you capture are hilarious nonsense!!! The app is about the chess match. I have had this app for 6 months and have yet to find a better chess engine! Plus the price is just right:)

Great Chess App
I love this chess app. It's the best one available if you're not looking to spend a lot of money for some casual chess. I'm not the greatest player, and I can beat the computer on levels 1,2 and sometimes 3, but levels 4 and 5 are beyond me. This gives me lots of flexibility in the type of game that I want, whether it's an easy win or a true challenge. I also use this app a lot to play against friends, passing it back and forth. Be careful trying to play head to head with the phone between you though, you'll find that when you're the upside down player, the iphone thinks your touching the screen above where you thought you were touching it, but you can get used to it hahaha.

Good Chess App :)
This is a great chess application for the beginner or casual player. There aren't any serious bugs from what I've seen so far, the game plays well, and the list of options is pretty cool as well.
I've read in other reviews of this app that the computer is too easy to beat. I'm guessing these reviews are from players who are much more serious about the game than I. I say while the game might not be on grandmaster level, it's good for what it is. It is called tChess Lite after all!

Bad: The opening book is very limited. Very little variety in its opening selection. The tactics are not great. The engine is a material monger. It will walk right into a pin or skewer just to snap off a pawn that's "unprotected". It has also abandoned the king several times when I've had a strong attack going to try to grab an unprotected pawn on the opposite side of the board. Because the program is so material oriented it will certainly help players to make sure all of their pieces are protected because the engine goes after your weaknesses with tremendous gusto.
Overall I'd say the approximate playing strength of the engine is about 1380-1420 ELO, great for most people but club players can crush the computer even on the hardest setting.

Good basic chess game.
I play this game allot and have come across a major bug (with paws taking other pieces by moving incorrenctly) that bug has forced me to restart games mid-way through. No update yet, so no fix yet. Still if your a chess fan it's worth the buck.

Nice chess game
This is a perfect app for beginners and people that aren't great chess players. It's the best game you can get for this price of only 99 cents. However, level 5 is not nearly as strong as it could be. My dad always beats it and it makes major mistakes in the endgame. As I said before, this chess app will do fine for beginners and those who aren't great chess players.

Interface is very well executed. Easy to see, easy to move. Great for a casual game during a meeting or downtime. Plays quickly. Nice match for the novice to medium skill player. I am enjoying it thoroughly and have had no technical problems.
Awesome chess app for quick games
I am a very impulsive quick person (probly shouldnt be playing chess) but this game is great for 5 minute fireworks. Easy to use interface, clean design, never crashed on me. I use this app every day - it's been months now.

This game is great, but sometimes it makes stupid moves. =] I think it has "moods".

Great Chess App
This Chess App is stable, simple, and has a great range of chess levels. My 4 year old is learning how the pieces move (the feature to show move options for a piece you select is great), my 6 year old is claiming his first victories at Level 2 (great motivation), and Level 4 is finding many different ways to beat me. I have a lot to learn, and I am so happy to have found this app to help me do just that ... and make my purchasing this expensive piece of equipment all the more worthwhile. Maybe one of these days, I'll be able to beat my father in law :-) ... talking about priceless.

I love chess although I'm not very good at it. When I saw that I could download chess for my iPod I was sooo excited. I began playing after restarting my iPod. I realized multiple things while playing.
•Certain chess pieces make illegal moves
•When you the game is over, the statistics haven't been recorded and if you start a new game it counts as a loss.
Please check out these minor issues!
Besides that, it's a pretty good app!

Great app for people who just want a chess app for the ipod without any fancy features. A low to medium skill level computer makes this a great app for beginning to intermediate chess players. You can also play your friend for additional fun. Could have a better AI though. Worth the price.

Beautiful, but minor programming issues create serious frustration.
I just purchased this game, and have to say I was truly astounded. The board itself is extremely simple, yet still manages to pull off a sense of beauty and regality that is hard to come by in most chess games for portable mediums. The graphics are crisp and clear, and there are a multitude of options for you to customize your game experience.
My only major qualm is that, twice now, the computer has pulled off miraculous moves where it passes me with a pawn, lands in a different space than my pawn, and still manages somehow to capture my pawn. This is extremely frustating as I play chess competetively and cannot fully act out strategies if the game is not cooperating and playing by the rules. DEV: Something needs to be fixed about this, as it is a massive drawback of the purchase. Please update the product with a fix! Thank you.

Not Good
Would not let me capture en passant (even though it allowed itself to do so earlier in the game). The ELO score doesn't much matter if the engine doens't allow all legal moves...
Nice little program, shall be able to save multiple games
Good basic capabilities. Does not dumb down by throwing away pieces in the beginning but make pretty basic mistakes at endgame even at level 5. It gives away an equal material game at the end. Biggest complaint from me is that it can only saves 1 game! Not good enough for a paid program.
If the t chess professional version is only 500 ELO stronger. Chessgenius would be much stronger and a better learning tool for $2.00 more.

Everything about this game is very polished. I like the highlighted circles that show you the legal moves. For my skill level, this game is perfect and definitely keeps me challenged.

VERY poor chess engine
Don't try to learn about proper chess with this app! Though this isn't the "pro" version, the chess engine is bad enough that I won't even try the other product. The computer is easily defeated even at the tougher difficulty settings. What's really troubling is that, when I played a game at moderate (4) difficulty, and let the computer choose all MY moves (the "hint" button), I was checkmated after watching one of the poorest-played games in history. And I'm a casual player. Perhaps the hint mechanism is pegged to the difficulty level? Anyway, find another program.

But the graphics just aren't good enough. The colors are weird (blue and black?) and the whole thing just looks bad. Other than that a great app.
Good but could use fine-tuning
Tom I own both apps. Very nice. But for us duffers PLEASE consider moving the hint button to the main screen. Incredibly annoying having to popup a separate menu screen over and over. Especially when I want to watch it play against itself.
worth every one of the 99 cents
i am by no means a good chess player but excited to get better with this game. i played this on a plane trip and it holds my attention, unlike many of the fad apps that i've downloaded but don't actually play much. really smooth and fast, plus you can go through your game moves to review when you got awesome or when you started losing. nice learning tool and fun too. the blue is cool, but maybe add some different board looks?

Good but one advice...
When you play with a human opponent, all the pieces on the board are facing only one way.. Which kinda looks weird.. But aside from that it's all good. Worth the price
A Very Well Done Chess App!
I've been obsessively playing tChess for the past three days - this is an extremely well written app for the casual player. Level 5 is reasonably challenging. My only gripe is that there is no save feature (available in the pro version). Highly recommended.

As someone who is steadily getting back into chess, this is perfect. One problem though, it doesn't seem to let you castle, a basic move invloving the King and a rook.

Ok so I spend the $1 to see if this engine is as powerful as we are led to believe. I got Cyber Chess Ultimate Online for free and currently it's $2. I played Cyber Chess Ultimate on expert against level 5 t Chess Lite twice last night. Each time t Chess Lite gets whooped hard. Ok so can t Chess Pro beat Cyber Chess Ultimate? Probably but I'm not gonna spend $8 to find out. Will say only thing t chess Lite has it it shows last move like Cyber Chess but also from whence it was moved from.

Great! Two suggestions
1 change the icon to somthing simple, maybe a blue tile with a king outline on it in white.
2 add other board colors (green and red)
Other wise no complaints. This is a no brainer if you like chess.
*update: really, this is a great app and well worth the $1. The ability to flip the board is great, as is the ability to backtrack and replay. Difficulty is great - I'm def an amateur but not a beginner and level three is teaching me a lot. Level four is a serious challenege and I haven't even played level five. For my level of play, I'm sure mastering through level five will keep me plenty busy. Still want to emphasize the suggestions above though....
Great for casual players.
I am a learning player, so I don't need anything challenging which is why I purchased this game. I like how you can take back moves, beautiful graphics, (the screenshot of the black and blue is all you get) and how it saves the games when you exit.
On the default level 3 (of 5) difficulty though I got a checkmate on the first game in about 10 minutes. I did raise the difficulty and this is about what I was wanting. If you are a hardcore pro I would look at the pro version of this game.

For just 99 cents this chess app has everything I wanted and more. I used the undo button like a billion times to beat the computer hehe. Most chess games cost way more

Basic algorithm but great interface!!
Ok.. So I am not really a chess expert and I had a hard time winning computer chess games. But this algorithm is probably the most basic I have come across. Once I found out that the algorithm can easily fall into rather standard strategies, I had wins after wins against the program, one time I forced it to checkmate in 7 moves!! .. And I haven't ever done that against any one else yet.
oh well! But we can't really complain for a .99 game.. Overall it's a good buy for the beautiful and very usable interface. If you are just looking to revisit the school days (like I was) or just getting comfortable with the board this is definitely a good buy. If you want to improve your game through iPhone, then paying won't be a bad idea.
