- The best portable chess EVER!
- This is possibly the best computerised chess program I have played! Small, simple but infinitely playable. Excellent!
- Great UI... but it beats me thoroughly at 1 second difficulty! Thanks a lot!
- I love your game! It's one of the best chess games I've ever played.
- Deep Green made me play chess again!

Better before update
by matthewande on June 01, 2009
It's a great app, don't get me wrong, but an update added strange, unchesslike sounds, for example a mechanical whirring when a piece is selected. I'm sure it can be shut off but instead I have changed the way I play, muting the volume or just not selecting the pieces till it's time move them.
I'm sure there were requests for sound effects but for a relatively expensive app I'd hoped they'd compliment the gameplay better.
Still a worthy app, an excellent overall experience.
Beautiful, Simplistic Chess Game
by matthiggins on May 25, 2009
This is a very good-looking game with a great engine, and it is most definitely the best chess game for iPhone. No annoying, shiny 3D graphics- just simple chess. Really teriffic.
Having said that, I'd like to point out that this game could use...
• A wifi two player mode, and bluetooth with 3.0. (like pass and play but on different devices)
That's really about it. This game is truly amazing.
Good chess for average joe
by govtrust on May 21, 2009
The graphics and gameplay are awesome. The chess engine is good for regular folks. I beat it every once in a while. Fun game worth the money
Excellent, but too expensive.
by drooz on April 24, 2009
It is the most enjoyable to play. It doesn't have pro analysis features, it is just a chess board. To whomever complained that it doesn't recognise a draw, who cares? It's not like you're chained to it and you have to continue playing. You can start a new game whenever you want.
there is better stuff
by kortsnoi on April 12, 2009
take glaurung chess instead; it enables you to save or email your game and it has a nice analysis function. I prefer it even if Deep Green seems to have a stronger engine.
Very, very disapointing
by MAB@BR on April 10, 2009
Sorry to say, but just don't buy it. Not worth it. It's not 1 star only for the appearance, which is pretty cool. But I can't choose level of difficulty, having a hard time find how to stop playback mode (useless by the way). For free I got Glaurung Chess, which is far superior. If I could, I'd just get my money back. Can I?
Its good.
by ClickWilder on March 27, 2009
No online play so I reserve a star. Interface seems to work well. No glitches so far.
I am happy.
Very polished chess app
by recursive on March 08, 2009
This app is very well polished:the UI is lickable, movement of pieces is animated, cration of new games is animated; the app is bug free. My only issue is that the Artificial intelligence is a bit... artificial: the computer is good in tactical decisions but it has no strategy to the game, even at the highest level of difficulty. Overall its very much fun.
One feature request i have: it would be nice to be able to play with another iphone over the air.
Beautiful to use and behold
by Insert31990 on March 01, 2009
Strong engine, too.
Get this app!
Best Chess Application Ever!
by Elijah M on February 25, 2009
This app really is a joy to use. It's even managed to secure the coveted "first page" space on my iPhone. I use it all the time, more than any other 3rd party app. I absolutely highly reccomend this application. It's helped my game by allowing me to practice chess anywhere and any time, and I simply love it.
Again, I cannot say enough about this application. If you enjoy chess at all, you must buy this app. 8 bucks is a steal...
Amazing Elegance, Impressive Engine
by BbStuckinTraffic on February 24, 2009
I love playing this game simple to see it's quick efficient beauty. Deep green is simple in usability and strong in play. I emailed the creator my suggestions (add game save, pgn, export/email, and openning training features). He quickly responded that they were coming in future releases and most in 1.1. I love the playback feature, having a slidebar or play or click through each move is great. I often play a game through, then go back to a key one of my mistakes and play the game anew. Great stuff. Thanks for the simple elegance of this wonderful game (great name, too). Btw, this was the most money I'd spent on any apple ap-more than worth it!
Good program...please add features
by Chessdudicus on February 22, 2009
I love the game playing aspect of this program. I also use it to follow along with the games played in chess books; this is much nicer than setting up a board. Hey developers! Please add the ability to replay a game, plus exporting the notation. After a reall great game it would be nice to have this for study. Right now all you can do is take back moves, very tiresome for analysis. Add this feature and I would give it 5 stars.
Chess Anytime!!
by Valerick on February 14, 2009
This app is really fun to use. I think with all the other chess app's this is by far well worth the price. If you want a cool chess app, then you have to have this one! It never has crashed, it gives you a great game at your own speed! The AI is hard to beat! Spend the money for this app!! Cheers!
Magnificent!
by iUberGeek on January 24, 2009
For those who do not need deep chess analysis or chess tutorials, this is the best chess app! The UI puts advanced features into a beautifully simple interface, the chess engine is just-right difficulty for me, and the game is simply a joy to play! By the way, clever name!
Suggestions:
Add online and LAN play.
Add a chess clock and chess move notation.
Add rules for variations of chess.
Add themes.
Continue your excellent updates and support!
Updated version works great for me so far
by OldCoder on January 18, 2009
Gorgeous graphics, easy to use. So far, it's been reliable for me. Enjoyable. Recommended.
Brilliant game
by Felipe Suñol B. on January 14, 2009
Extremely polished. Only this kind of effort and dedication towards an app should be accepted on the App Store. The gameplay is smooth and quick, the interface is beautiful; one of the apps which will become timeless for the platform. Well worth it. Expecting future work from Cocoastuff.
Great!
by Ashbax on January 13, 2009
Beautiful Chess Game!
Nearly perfect!
by Ardekantur on January 12, 2009
I highly recommend this Chess app for people interested in playing on the go. But please, please, implement rotation of the board for two human players without having to go back and forth between the settings menu! If two humans are playing, just rotate the board after each move!
Keep 'em comming!
by GamesRCool on January 11, 2009
This is a beautiful application with gorgeous graphics and a great engine that is hard to beat while still not impossible. The screen is not cluttered with tons of unneeded icons, the ability to customize your game play is wonderful, and the price while high is well worth it and not overwhelming. My only issue is that I can't find any more games like it! Cocoa Stuff did a great job on the app and I wish they could make more like a checkers or backgammon game.
Awesome and Beautiful
by Casey Weed on January 06, 2009
Great! Very clean, precise, and pretty interface. The only thing I would have liked to see is the ability to play another opponent via WiFi, that would make it perfect. For that I just got Chess With Friends.
$8??!!
by Kyle Auga on January 05, 2009
I paid the price of a meal for THIS?? I want my money back
Deep Green Flaws
by JDR01 on January 04, 2009
The game does not recognize when there is insufficient material to mate. It also does not allow for a draw or stalemate.
Great graphics, good AI
by cbarrick on January 03, 2009
My favorite chess app
Excellent chess app
by kmmarasco on January 02, 2009
I had a few qualms with this app, and actually got a hold of the developer after he responded to a crash in the app. He was very good at answering questions and was open to feedback, and he gave me an idea of where the app is headed.
As far as I'm concerned, this is a great chess app for the iPhone and well worth the price.
Weak
by ChessFan on January 01, 2009
I deleted this game soon after I installed it. Its pretty but plays poorly.
Good, with a minor change c/b great
by C. Solomon on January 01, 2009
This is a beautiful user interface, nice work. Please add an option to turn OFF vibrations when your king is in check.
Crisp!
by Spweber on December 31, 2008
New to ITouch, but not new to chess. If you need tutorials or game analysis then you may not enjoy this app. However, if you enjoy playing chess--then this is the app to buy. Clean, crisp interface--and the $5 price through December is a true bargain.
Better after 1.0.1 update
by da bomb 1022 on December 31, 2008
This still happens but not as much
Everything is nice except sometimes i can't make legal moves and it makes me mad! Do not buy until an update comes
Practically perfect in every way
by Joe Chrysler on December 31, 2008
A well thought out, beautifully crafted app. One every other app designer should look carefully at. Plus, the home icon is totally free of the obnoxious reflection curve found in almost every other chess app. Well done.
Perfect!
by Orborborb on December 29, 2008
Ideal interface, beautiful board and pieces without any clutter. I'm no expert but I know a few tactics and appreciate a chess AI that beats me solidly, which this does!
Nice but too weak for my needs
by skygkar on December 28, 2008
I currently own 3 chess programs: Caissa, tChess Pro and Deep Green.
As of Dec. 2008, Deep Green has the weakest engine of the 3 and has some UI bugs. It is nice and has minimal fuss on screen. But then it lacks several on-screen data like move list for those who wants to do problems or really improve their skills.
So, if you are looking for a nice chess program to play occasionally, chances are that the engine level will be more than sufficient for you and you’ll love it.
For more serious amateurs, I would not recommend it in its current version : there is more powerful engines available.
The best chess experience on any platform
by Prionux on December 28, 2008
This is how Chess was meant to be played on a mobile device. The gameplay is smooth and the UI simply stays out of your way. I now play chess at least once a day, which is something that I have never done before.
Simply the Best
by RikkiWi on December 20, 2008
Beautiful graphics. Slick interface. Lots of nifty (but not intrusive) special f/x. Obviously a true labor of love. And an incredibly responsive and caring designer. Don't even hesitate...just buy it.
As perfect as they come
by mwalker on December 16, 2008
This is a wonderful game of the chess for the iPhone! The UI is easy to navigate, the graphics are appealing, and the game is solid.
If you buy only one chess game this year, buy this one. You won't regret it.
Graphically appealing with...
by Tboomer on December 16, 2008
...a pretty strong chess engine. There is only one thing missing: it does not show you the depth of your move which my other favorite chess app, tChess Pro does. But this app has better graphics and I don't really know which one is the stronger engine b/c I am the worst chess player who ever lived....
Best chess app out there
by anes doc on December 16, 2008
This app is beautiful. You can play a challenging computer or a friend on the same iPhone. There is no multiple iPhone mode or play over the internet here, but its by far the most elegant UI.
beautiful!
by s3raphim on December 16, 2008
just wish it had an analysis or tutorial mode.
Beautiful.
by Overall a good thing on December 16, 2008
Used to use Caissa, but now this came out. Very simple and fun to use. Perfect. Thank you.
Although I have encountered one problem. The game is too hard. Seriously needs some dumbing down. I am very impressed with everything about the app besides that. I love the game of chess, but I'm not good enough to beat this computer.
Actually I take that back! I can beat it! (Three times in a row :D)
However the lowest difficulty should still be easier. Also I think the game needs to indicate check or checkmate.
Needs more work! Not yet worth the price.
by happyAtLast on December 15, 2008
Don't fall for all these 5-star reviews. Yes, this is a great start but for $4.99 it should at least have sounds and some indication of "check" and "checkmate". I'm hoping an update arrives soon with these improvements but until then I feel like I've wasted 5 bucks.
nice UI, weak engine and crashes too often
by Jeff2008_123 on December 15, 2008
I wish I could try this application before buying it. Big mistake. The UI is nice but overall this is horrible
- It doesn't understand what a "draw" is after 3 repeative moves
- Chess engine is too weak and if you increase its level, it crashes too often!!
- No way of telling when chessmate
- If you miss "touching" a piece and move your finger, it flips the board!
- Sent crash reports to developer and never never got any response back.
If I'd, I want my money back.
green
by Sir Famous on December 14, 2008
good app just a little buggy
No Humans Here
by Delblanco10 on December 14, 2008
This is why every app should have a free trial. A dumbed down AI is not "human". I hate playing chess with computers. Chess With Friends is much better, and it's free. What a waste of $5.
In a word, excellent
by tjsf on December 14, 2008
I've tried about four different chess apps, and all of them were lacking either in graphics, interface, or playability. Deep green wins on all three counts, and more. The interface is intuitive, simple, and beautiful; the engine can be tuned for everyone from beginners to Kasparov; and the graphics are clean and attractive. The only chess app worth your time.
Great Chess App
by Frzrburn on December 14, 2008
I have been on the fence for a long time on getting a chess app. Simply put none of them looked right. This is a great app that is very refined and well worth the money. If you are still wondering if you should buy this just do it you will be happy you did. This Is what all apps should aspire to. Very highly recommended. Perfect. It is on my home screen.
Best Chess Game
by B3RARD on December 14, 2008
Best chess game yet. Far better than any of the others. If you like chess at all then buy this app, you will not regret it. I do have some requests for future versions to make it even better: a redo button (maybe be able to use the slider from game replay during the game), something that says checkmate when checkmate happens, network play, option to show valid moves when selecting a piece, option to show captured pieces on the main screen, stats, timer, and more boards and pieces to choose from.
Great Chess Game
by RockBandit on December 13, 2008
Version 1.0: Rock solid, beautiful, and fun game. Had one weird error and sent an email to the author, he said it will be fixed in the next version! Otherwise, great and fun game!
Un-friggin-believable!
by Ivan_Grozney on December 13, 2008
One of the most well polished apps I've seen so far @ 1.0 - it can only get better. Sounds and a beautiful CHECKMATE banner would be nice. Also networked play.
Perfect
by samwiches on December 12, 2008
This app is perfect. No other chess app works as well or is as polished as Deep Green. It's clear how much work the author has put into making this the best chess game for iPhone. Highly recommended.
Great
by JT_3o5 on December 12, 2008
Would've given it 5 stars but would like to see on next update ..... Some sound and also some sort of win/loss tracking system and maybe once you checkmate you see something on the screen like "Checkmate" ...... Then see the king perishing ....... Well those are just suggestions other than that the game is great
The best in it's class
by trake8 on December 12, 2008
This is a fantastic game. UI is unbelievable. Very rich and thought out. I would love to see future versions have the option of "dumbing down" the computer opponent! Well worth 5 stars and the cost of the program.
Great app
by Timfou on December 12, 2008
Beautiful UI and strong AI. Needs a roll forward option to go with roll back and needs a pretty message to popup when a checkmate happens. Currently the game just stops and nothing happens.
Beauty crafted and polished
by w a t e r on December 12, 2008
This chess app is simply far too good to be 1.0! Stable, fully functional stand alone chess. One of the best thought out User Interfaces bar none.
This and "chess with friends" are my only remaining chess apps!
Welcome Back
by ExNewt on December 11, 2008
What a blast from the past - I still have Deep Green on my trusty, still-functioning great-uncle of the iPhone, my MP2100 Newton. This 'version' of Deep Green has a great user interface, some really nice animation, and I STILL can't beat it.
Egg Freckles!
true excellence.
by squibcake on December 11, 2008
This is quite possibly the most elegant app I have encountered so far. It allows you to play chess against a skilled engine or human opponent anywhere you happen to be, without any senseless interface clutter. Anyone who complains about this app is simply asking too much from it. You want online turns? Get Chess With Friends for free. This thing does what it says it does PERFECTLY. Thanks for that, Cocoa Stuff.
Best chess app for iPhone!
by JHBRAD on December 11, 2008
Love this app and it can only get better.
Beautiful and functional
by Josh S.. on December 10, 2008
Of course you want your chess app to look awesome, but this also has a great chess engine and elegant interface. Very impressive.
Only wish it had some kind of turn-based hookup to play people online.
Definative iPhone chess game
by acreek on December 10, 2008
I have downloaded a lot of iPhone chess games. This is by far the most satisfying. The UI is damn near perfection, and feels comfortable at all times. The chess engine is tough as well.
So sweet.
by edog1203 on December 10, 2008
It doesn't get any better. Newton MessagePad represent represent.
beautiful gem of a chess application
by snaggle92 on December 10, 2008
The attention to detail in this chess application, the presentation, user interface, beautifully rendered graphics, and challenging play, all combined make this chess application an amazing gem and a pleasure to use. $4.99 is a steal for this.
Gorgeous - can't wait to see where it goes
by jvadnais on December 10, 2008
I currently use tChess Pro and I love it for my iPhone chess needs. Deep Green is absolutely beautiful - the soft graphics and subtle animations. Exactly what an iPhone app should look like.
To me, it's missing a few (very few) key features that make tChess just a little bit more functional. One is the ability to step forward in addition to stepping back moves.
Also, even on it's "easiest" setting, Deep Green is still really, really tough to beat. I'm still a chess beginner, and I like tChess because I can beat it every once in a while. Deep Green is a joy to use, but only if you also enjoy getting clobbered regularly.
Best Chess App by far
by seanson on December 10, 2008
Beautiful graphics and a simple, elegant UI. This is the best Chess App by far for the iPhone.
well designed chess app.
by sadatk on December 10, 2008
Very well designed app. The chess board and pieces are gorgeous. The playback feature is nifty.
Not a big chess player myself, but I'm sure this will suit me just fine for the times I find myself wanting some chess.
Seriously refined interface and interaction
by asfarasicantell on December 09, 2008
I have been holding off on getting a chess game for the iPhone because I wasn't happy with the overall design of the options available. Deep Green is the refined user experience I had been waiting for. The graphics, animation, and game interaction design make it a joy to play. After a couple of games my only complaint so far is the lack of feedback when the game is over. When I lose a game (I haven't won yet) the only indication besides the position of the pieces is that I can't move any of my pieces and the "next move" hint icon is deactivated.
Superb
by squashasan on December 09, 2008
Heirloom quality, finely detailed, elegant chess on the iPhone. Impressive simplicity of interface, and boy is my chess memory rusty. The craftsmanship begs the player to return and nspired me to practice. Highly recommended. The drawers are slick.
Wonderfully done
by hepwori on December 09, 2008
A really super implementation; very easy to use and nicely put together. Just what you'd imagine an iPhone chess application should be like: simple, beautiful, fun. I'm no chess expert but the gameplay seems solid to me. Very happy indeed with the app.
Best Chess Game For The iPhone
The user interface is off-the-charts beautiful. Deep Green's one of the best iPhone apps around, and the best chess engine by leaps-and-bounds.
